Where 'Girl With a Pearl Earring' was subtle and fascinating, this further attempt to re-create a neglected historical period is over-researched and stereotyped. So much of the book is spent describing historical olde England for an American readership that the sudden introduction of plot elements seems brash and artificial. Enough of the pints at the pub, me old mums, she nevers and gracelessly inserted facts that the author found interesting - and more of the strong characterisation and gentleness.
