Considering some parts of it are supposed to be true, and that the author is so obviously keen to show off her extensive research, it's surprising how unconvincing much of this novel is. The modern sensibilities of the main characters are particularly jarring, making you root for the poor backward peasants who don't know any better. Sometimes simplicity is the right choice - get those metaphors out of here and just tell the story!
