The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold

People have recommended this and I've avoided reading it until now, because for some reason I don't find very appealing a story about a teenager who is raped, murdered, dismembered, then watches her family grieve from heaven. But they were right - it is curiously affecting, in parts at least (so to speak) and haunting (so to speak), as long as you overlook the strange ending. Tissues at the ready.
