Lots of people think Davies was the best novelist of the 20th century. From the evidence of this trilogy, I don't even think he was the best novelist of the 1970s. It seems so laboured and self-indulgent, and a lot of it doesn't even make sense. It's no doubt all very clever but I'd prefer to enjoy it.
