The Wrong Boy - Willy Russell

The cover blurb promised that this was a 'comic masterpiece'. Well, it was comic if you find stories about boys with ever-more-unfortunate lives (including being accused of child abuse) funny, and a masterpiece if you think sentimentality and dark, twisting plots make a good novel together. Some of the characters were quite strong (though spoiled by some self-referential parts towards the end) but, really, it didn't succeed in any of its aims - comedy, social comment, adolescent character study or engrossing story. Disappointing and depressing.
