As I'd never heard of Gregory Maguire, I had no expectations related to his reputation as a fantasy writer, from which this is a departure. Well, a departure of sorts - it's hardly gritty reality. But I enjoyed the vivid characterisation (the anguished gay protagonist, the insecure teenagers, the witty nuns) and the unusually engaging treatment of Catholicism. I even enjoyed the slightly fragmented narrative structure with its truly unexpected twists. But its strongest point is shockingly rare - humour treated skilfully enough to actually make me laugh.

  1. Witty nuns? I think I shall add this one to the reading list.
