Many writers try to emulate Janet Evanovich but few succeed (and I guess they become her ghostwriters). If you're looking for deep and thoughtful, look elsewhere, but for warm, funny, engaging and unpredictable, her books are hard to beat. As much of a gulp-down treat as the cupcakes so lovingly described in the story.

Perhaps I'm being more lenient because I read this after so much po-faced High Literature. It's not a particularly good novel but it's fun escapism, as usual.

Oh dear. I'm going to have to be harsh. At least the writers of the other disappointing novels I've read recently seem to have tried to produce something they thought was worthwhile. Evanovich is evidently trapped in a lucrative contract and has taken to churning out formulaic trashy adventures for poor Stephanie. Yes, it's fun, yes, it's readable but no, it's not good enough.

I did enjoy it. I did want to give it 60% but it just didn't deserve it. Funny - at times; fast-moving - generally; good characters - always. But it had the sense of being a struggle to write, and that made it a struggle to read. This series is running out of steam.

More escapist crime nonsense, with the usual colourful situations and characters. Many of them seem to have been introduced for the sake of it, however, and after six books read fairly close together, the formula is over-familiar. Still very funny, though.

Lots of fun, and a strong female lead - albeit a slightly incompetent and misguided one. The unfulfillled sexual chemistry between the two main characters drove the rather confusing plot - and the lucky ending couldn't really be any other way. Hoorah! Seven more to go!
