I have no memory of buying this so I read it - and I only remembered I'd read it after finishing the book I'd read after it, a few days later, which isn't a good sign. It was fine - amusing, with good worldbuilding, but the story was confusing and not particularly exciting for a YA adventure. It was (Fforde's adult fantasy/satire) Shades of Grey lite.

Billed as an eccentric futuristic romance, this was actually more of a terrifying dystopian satire - funny at times, certainly clever and inventive, but neither cosy nor reassuring. Which isn't a bad thing, especially as some of the ideas are oddly plausible, but it suffered from a lack of emotional connection to the characters' rather desperate plights.

Like the first book in the series, 'The Eyre Affair', this is not so much a novel as a string of clever ideas, unfunny jokes and literary in-references. It's a pity, because the idea of respecting classic literature while not taking it too seriously should be more widespread. Disappointing.
