My husband tells me that Tom Holt is beloved of teenage boys who have graduated from Terry Pratchett. I've not read much Pratchett either but I imagine it's funnier and more memorable than this, though I do grudgingly admire the ingenuity of the convoluted plot. Looks like I last read a Holt novel 10 years ago and advised myself not to try his fantasy novels. Oh well.

This is very silly, very repetitive and very unrealistic. Comedy grates uncomfortably against tragedy. The characters are hard to tell apart, and parts of the plot just fade away. However, it's great fun, refreshingly colloquial and a ripping good yarn. I don't think I'll try his fantasy novels, though.
