Telling the story via media channels was an interesting (if hardly original) conceit but it meant that you never get into the heads of any of the characters. The ones who were supposed to be 'good' were so irritating that I expected them to turn out to be the villains. (Spoiler: they didn't. The obvious villains were the villains.)

This mostly seemed to be an advert for the Isle of Harris tourist board - apparently, it's practically perfect - but it was also a rather reactionary story about a fallen woman eventually getting her comeuppance and a couple of deeply uninteresting 30-somethings rediscovering themselves.

I don't know what drew me to this but I'm glad I was. It's well-told speculative fiction, a vivid reinterpretation of the Wild West for women. Unfortunately, the author heaped too many misfortunes and poor decisions on the narrator, most of the characters were interchangeable and the ending was rushed and unsatisfying. But it was still a good read so I'm being generous with my grade.
