This wasn't as fun or as ridiculous as I'd hoped - in fact it took itself very seriously for a novel about the decadence of 19th century Venice. Despite its colourful subject matter, yet again the vast historical research is shown off at the expense of an interesting story, and marred by the independent heroine's inexplicable obsession with two unattractive (historically real) mean. Despite this, the book was intelligently written, brave and clever. But much too long.
