Despite the hype, I found this strangely uninvolving. Perhaps I'm missing something but I really did miss convincing characterisation and narrative subtlety. In particular, the constant metaphors became strained, as if they had been composed for a creative writing class. Yes, it is interesting to read about Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh but (as with the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency) a different culture doesn't in itself make a good novel.
