Girls in White Dresses - Jennifer Close

I won this on Twitter and, like the bottle of Prosecco it came with, found it as light and bubbly as you'd expect - at least at first. Several interchangeable young women drink and date their way through their twenties - so far, so chick lit. I read it in an evening, so it was hardly demanding. But for one, it's actually very funny (highly unusual in my experience). In some ways, it's also quite sophisticated. The vignettes of each chapter subtly show how relationships and attitudes change with experience, questioning whether what you gain (stability) is worth what you lose (freedom). It felt like a rehearsal for a deeper, more literary novel that is yet to come.
