Alan Bissett was in the same writers' group as me in Scotland. He was the golden boy; most people only turned up to listen to his latest installment. I've never met anyone so talented, or so arrogant. He has an eye for images and a very visual style of writing, but utlimately it lacks subtlety - and a plot.
