I like Belinda Bauer's far-fetched small-town crime capers. Yes, the plots don't bear too much thought, and the characters are larger than life, but the quality of the writing makes you suspend your disbelief and just go with it.

Unlike Rubbernecker, not particularly dark or deep, but just as deftly drawn, quirky and unpredictable, with the occasional skewering one-liner thrown in to light the reader's way.

This 'companion novel' to 'The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry' is really more a back story for the goal of that pilgrimage. Beautifully written and tragic, as you'd expect from Joyce, but Queenie is not the most compelling character and ultimately it all seems rather unnecessary.
