The final book in the 'Windsinger' trilogy, and probably the weakest. Still poetic and mystical, but somehow also predictable and trite. Still, a mature novel for younger readers, and an excellent trilogy.

This is much better than the first in the trilogy - not as weird and twisted, perhaps more derivative (c.f. Northern Lights, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars) but harmonious and satisfying. The moral points are subtler than before, and more effective because of it. Also, a well imagined, consistent world. I'm not expecting a happy ending to this trilogy, though...

A dark tale of politics, corruption and disillusionment, interspersed with rather cheesy glimpses of family life. A little uneven, on reflection, but a well imagined story, well told.
