I liked this book more than the Trinidad Tourist Office probably does, and more than I should when the author had to justify some of her narrative choices in an endnote. It did a good job of juxtaposing Trinidad's violence and poverty with its aspiration and luxury, and managed to stay engaging despite having so few sympathetic characters.

This was trying to be Crazy Rich Asians, and to some extent Counterfeit, but was held back by the cliched and predictable plot, the weirdly overwrought writing style and the poor editing. There seemed to be too much focus on florid descriptions of flower arrangements and none at all on character development or elements that would help with sense and flow.
