If You Could See the Sun - Ann Liang

This has a great premise and (slightly) unusual setting but it doesn't explore either enough. The tediously self-involved protagonist can turn invisible - so many possibilities! - but most of what she gets up to is skimmed over. Also not interrogated was the love interest letting her take the fall for something he was also involved in. But it's fine, as long as they're together, right?

I wouldn't recognise a designer handbag even if somebody hit me with one, but apparently they change hands for thousands of dollars. The story gained a certain nuance via the unreliable narrator(s), upending (some) stereotypes and considering what makes one thing 'fake' if it's exactly the same as something else, but in the end the story just wasn't particularly memorable. And what is it with these demon toddlers in recent books?

The words were as rich and vivid and slightly overdone as the cover. The story was standard adventure fare with added magic, a fresh dash of  Chinese legends and a heroine-on-a-mission. The result was... fine.

The leftovers from the first book. Great cover, though.

Just as badly written and poorly edited and stupidly fun as you'd expect.
